NOT FAIR.
OUR contemporary should really exercise a little discretion in admitting letters from correspondents which are totally wrong as to facts. For instance, in the Herald’s issue of Tuesday last appeared a letter signed “Creditor,” reflecting on Mr Aislabie’s absence from town, and accusing him of wasting his time in electioneering. Of course the taunt is levelled indirectly at Mr McDonald, whom “creditor” insinuates Mr Aislabie is assisting with his canvas of the Wairoa electors. Now, as a matter of fact, we may state that Mr Aislabie did not go to Wairoa at all, but to Nuhaka, which is not in the Wairoa electoral district, nor is he canvassing for anybody. He simply went there on a commission to buy a mob of sheep for a Poverty Bay squatter, and as he is receiving nothing from his estate he is surely not to be deprived of making some money for his family’s support. We may add also that the bankrupt received permission from the Deputy Official Assignee to be absent from the meeting. In its anxiety to do harm to Mr McDonald’s cause the Herald admitted a letter to its columns (perhaps the editor wrote it himself) which casts an unwarrantable slur on a man who is down, and therefore according to the Herald’s recognised rule is a fair subject for a stab in the dark.
