Speaking of the cold snap of last week the Hastings Evening Star says:—Mr Nelson must have opened the doors of his freezing chambers, as the last two nights have been about as Cold as they make it in these parts, Messrs ft. Vautier, H. Williams, and the Hon. N. Wilson have been appointed members ot the Napier Harbour Board. Since the Hon. Mr Reynolds opened his labour bureau in Dunedin employment has been found for over 200 men. Mr Reynolds is now about to start a similar institution in Christchurch.

The Waimakiriri protection works have sustained £BOO worth of damage by the recent floods.

Eastern seed is now being pressed on the Californian market as New Zealand seed, to the detriment of our local interests. Some shipments have already been made from Lyttelton to San Francisco this season, which, it is to be hoped, will lead to the development of a profitable business in the future. If this report be true the Poverty Bay seed will find another market.
