Speaking of the cold snap of last week the Hastings Evening Star says:—Mr Nelson must have opened the doors of his freezing chambers, as the last two nights have been about as Cold as they make it in these parts, Messrs ft. Vautier, H. Williams, and the Hon. N. Wilson have been appointed members ot the Napier Harbour Board. Since the Hon. The Lyttelton Times states that there is promise of a fairly good trade being established with the Pacific States ot North America in cocksfoot grass, there called “ orchard grass,” the New Zealand article having been considered much superior to that grown in the Eastern States. Eastern seed is now being pressed on the Californian market as New Zealand seed, to the detriment of our local interests. Some shipments have already been made from Lyttelton to San Francisco this season, which, it is to be hoped, will lead to the development of a profitable business in the future. If this report be true the Poverty Bay seed will find another market.
