THE TURF PETRO STAR’S EASY WIN IN N.Z. OAKS

Globe Direct Wins Sprint CHRISTCHURCH, December 11. The New Brighton Trotting Club held its summer meeting yes. terday in fine weather before a good attendance. Petro Star, a well-made filly by U. Scott from Single Star, owned by Messrs B. Grice and R. Millar and trained by B. Grice at Tinwald, had a comfortable win in the New Zealand Oaks, one of the feature events on the programme. The race was a disappointing spectacle. Pedro Star was, as usual slow to strike her hopples, but she recovered quickly, and taking the lead before the end of half a mile, was never afterwards in danger of defeat. Roschana, which had been handy throughout the running, was an easy second, with Lady Joss, which was having her first race experience, made a promising showing to be third. The well-backed Anitra and Farlena were never dangerous, especially the latter, which again showed her dislike to starling in a Held by breaking and losing all chance. Zulu, which had been somewhat of a disappointment at Addington recently, returned to his best form with a clear-cut win in the Members’ Handicap, in which he did most of the pacemaking and then hadi a good deal in hand to spare at the finish. Ikaroa went another solid race for second without ever looking likely to trouble the winner, while Despatch continued his consistent showings for the season by finishing on strongly for third. Globe Direct, in winning the Au Revoir Handicap, was responsible for an jmpressive Auckland Cup trial, as he was badly placed halfway up the straight where he was giving Plunder Bar a substantial lead, but he came on the outside to win by a neck going away. The totalisator handled £94,945, compared with £84,630 last year, an increase of £7,315. Results are as follows Canterbury Handicap.—l9/19 MARGARET LOGAN, J. G.
