During the first nine months of 1949, the amount, of coal railed from Buller was 97,945 tons, compared with 116,466 tons 44 cwt for the corresponding period in 1948 (not including 6606 tons railed to Greymouth during March, 1948, for shipment to the North Island during the period when the Westport harbour was unworkable by the larger type of colliers because of the shoaling on the bar). Production of coal from all sources during the first, nine months of this year amounted to 280,306 tons 9 cwt., which is considerably less than the amount for the corresponding period in 1948, during which the output was 365,099 tons 3 cwt. The amount railed from the district was 10,899 tons, the State mines providing 7640 tons, and the other mines in the endowment area 1276 tons. Mines outside the area provided 1983 tons. Seventeen colliers inward and the same number outward worked the port during the month, bringing the totals for the nine months of the year to 123 colliers inward and 121 outward. The amount of timber shipped from the port was 108,600 superficial feet, bringing the total for the first nine months of the year to 363,088 super, feet.
