HOKITIKA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent) HOKITIKA, Nov 11. As the result of an accident at the intersection of Hampden and Brittan streets, on July 22, of this year. Henry Jones, employed as a driver bv Camerons, Transport Ltd., and Frank Stewart, appeared before Mr E. A. Lee, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court, at Hokitika, on Thursday. Stewart was convicted and ordered to pay costs on a charge of operating a motor cycle without a warrant of fitness. Jones was convicted and fined £5, with 16s Court costs, for failing to give way to tradic approaching on his right. A charge against Cameron of operating’ _ a truck with defective brakes was dismissed.

The' Magistrate said that the test for defective brakes should be made at 20 m.p.h. The inspector had said ho considered the speed to be 20 m.p.h. during the test, but the regu lations were not fulfilled by an approximate figure. The road was wet and therefore the evidence was not conclusive and the charge against Cameron would be dismissed Henrv Lesley Hecc was convicted and fined 30s, with 10s costs, for not being in possession of a heavy traffic license for his vehicle. F'or exceeding the maximum speed limit for heavy motor vhicles, Maurice Arthur Braddick was convicted and fined £1 with 10s costs. . Francis Noame and Reginald James Kerr, both of Kumara, were each fined £5 and court costs and ordered to pay single royalty lees of £lO L>s 8d for cutting timber in the Waimea Survey District, without lawful authority. R C. Patterson was convicted and fined £l, with 10s costs, for failing to prace tickets on window display fruit in his shop. Kanieri-Hokitika Sawmills Ltd., were ordered to pay £7 to the State Forest Service for operating a locomotive engine in Block H, Kaniere Survey District without providing a safe and efficient -means for preventing the escape of dangerous sparks from the funnel.
