Presbyterian Church’s Need of Increase In Subscriptions
p.A. TIMARU, November 9. As its Church work has been affeiced by a rising cost of living in a similar manner to any normal business enterprise, the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand will call 0.1 its congrgations to subscribe £11,009 more this year than last, to meet increasing costs of maintaining existing work, particularly for missionary purposes. Congregations will be asked, to contribute £71,585. In his report to the General Assembly; of the Church at Timaru, yesterday, general treasurer (Mr L. B. Mushet) said that the . past year had been a record c 1 giving by congregations. They contributed £60,960 to the missionary enterprise of the Church. This was only 78 short of the budgeted objective Total receipts from all sources amounted to £77,123. wnich was £1368 more than estimated normal requirements. Because of the years over-expenditure, which has exceedea the estimate by £2865, there had been a deficit on the year’s working, said Mr Mushet. This was not due to any slump in congregation returns but to expenditure which was un avoidable. Presbyterian congregations, he continued, had actual y cerased their contributions m t mst-12 months, by £6692 while th receipts lor the year had excecded 1948-49 by £4861.
