P.A. INVERCARGILL, Nov. 8 Three Australians and one New Zealander remain in the field to contest the semi-finals of the New Zealand women’s amateur golf championship to be played at Otatara on Thursday. After foui’ days of fine weather, a cold snap was experienced! this morning, and hail and sleet, backed by a strong southerly wind, nlade conditions uncomfortable. After a brief storm, the skies cleared, but the weather remained cold. Mrs Jackson Ball, of Wanganui, reigning. New Zealand champion, was defeated by the young Queenslander, Miss Judith Percy 2 up, in a game which went to the 18th hole. The Australian was playing a long drive, with even seconds. Mrs Ball was not playing with her usual ease. Miss Percy led 2 up at the turn, after which Mrs Ball settled to a more conf’dent tempo, and, but for two putting lapses at crucial points up to the 15th., might have overtaken her opponent’s lead. At the 16th hole, Miss Percy was dormie 2, and she half stymied Mrs Ball, who negotiated successfuly to win the hole. At the 17th., Miss Percy laid a full stymie, but Mrs Ball holed out with one of the finest shots of the morning’s play. At the 18th., both were on in threes, but Mrs Ball missed a four-foot putt, to be 2 down. The Australian champion, Miss P. Borthwick, played good golf to beat the Queensland champion, Miss Fletcher, 2 up. Miss Zoe Hudson (Christchurch) defeated Mrs H. A. Murray (Wellington) 2 and 1 in a closely fought game, to be the only New Zealander to reach the semi-finals. Quality golf was produced by the two youngest competitors in the round, Miss Maxime Bishop (Westralian champion) and Miss Rosemary Hodges (Auckland). Miss Bishop took' the match by 3 and 1.
