KEEN INTEREST IN U.S. BY-ELECTION
(Rec. 9.15), NEW YORK, Nov 7. The election of the Senators in New York State takes place tomorrow. It offers a preview of the 1950 struggle for control of congress. This election over-shadows all others in the nation-wide voting. New York elects a Mayor and Council for a foui’ years term. New Jersey and Virginia elect Governors. Bys-elections are being held to fill House of Representatives seats in one New York district and one Californian district many local officials are being chosen throughout the country. The New York Senatorial contest is for a seat vacated by the democratic Senator, Mr Robert Wagners, resignation earlier this j'ear. Governor Dewey appointed the Republican Party, foreign policy expert, Mr John i Foster Dulles, to the seat until tomorrows election. Mr Dulles is seekink election for the remainder of Mr Wagners term which expires in Jan. 1951. His democratic opponent is the former New York Governor Mr Her bert Lehman. Mr John Dulles made President Trumans Fair Deal an issue by attacking it during his campaign. Mr Lehman has campaigned in favour of Mr Trumans programme, President Truman, in a radio address has supported Mr Lehman. New York results are expected to indicate what the State’s trends will be in 1950. when six years’ Senatorial terms and the Governorship will Im at stake. They may be influenced greatly by what happens in The NevYork City Mayoral election, whine the democrat Mr William Odwyer, is opposed by a republican—Liberal fusion candidate Mr Newbold Morris, and representative Vito Marcantonio (American Labour Party candidate) The democrats are expected to win the House of Representatives byeelecticins in New York and California made necessary by the deaths of the democrat Mr Andrew Somers, and the Republican Mr Richard Welch respectively.
