NEW SCHOOLS BURDEN BEYOND MEANS OF ENGLISH CATHOLICS
LONDON, Nov. 5 The Roman Catholics in England and Wales have offered to lease their 1500 schools to the secular authorities and to give up their right to appoint teachers. The proposals, which have been put before the Ministry of Education, are the climax to the Catholic dissatisfaction with the settlement as to the Roman Catholic schools embodied in the Educational Act of 1944. The offer is made in order to secure the lifting by the Government of what the Catholics state to be the “impossible burden” under the Act of finding afi least £50,000,000 needed for building and reorganisation. The teachers would be subject to their approval as to religious belief, character and fitness, and religious education would go on unchanged.
