Outsider Dundee Sandy Defeats Checkmate In Ollivier Handicap

Burns Night’s Success In N.Z. Derby Stakes CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 6. In a thrilling finish which had to be decided by a photo _ Dundee Sandy won the Ollivier Handicap, the main event on the programme at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting held at Addington yesterday, from Checkmate. Lady Averill was third and Commander Scott fourth. Dundee Sandy, which had petered out in the Jubilee Cup after making most of the running, was allowed to settle in behind, and came fast from the furlong to beat Checkmate. It was Dundee Sandy’s first win for more than two season’s. Checkmate, after attempting to make the pace throughout, went under only in the last stride. Lady Averil had every chance, but battled on for third. Burns Night, which had run a useful race in the Riccarton Stakes last week, had obviously derived benefit from the outing, and finished strongly to beat the warm favourite Young Charles, in. the N.Z. Derby Stakes. The race was the feature event on the second day’s card of the N.Z. M.T.C. Although Burns Night won well, the honours of the race went to the favourite, as, when the field had settled down he was giving the leaders fully sixty yards. From the four furlong post Young Charles was forced over extra ground, to make his run, being on the outside of Casacando and Soangetaha. Burns Night, patiently driven, was not asked for his effort until the final furlong. Van Dieman did well for his placing, and with a better beginning, might have been closer up. Casacando, which made most of the pace, was tiring at the finish, as was Soangetha, which had every chance. Acclamation won her first free-for-all, when she took the Sockburn Sprint comfortably. As was usual with her, she did not begin very well, but once into her stride gradually made up her leeway, and at the finish was not extended. Fantom, which came home very strongly, may have run her to a closer decision but for the fact that he broke when bolding a prominent position after three furlongs. The meeting was held in fine weather and a fast track. There was a large attendance. Results were as follows:— November Handicap.—6/4 ISLABURN LASS (M.
