Snowy River Dredge’s latest return is: 911ozs of gold from 40,400 yards i. 245 hours. His Majesty will make his usual broadcast to the Commonwealth at 3 p.m., G.M.T., on Christmas Day. The speech will probably be broadcast. from the Royal country residence at Sandringham. The Railways Department is to run special trains from Hokitika, Greymouth, and Westport for the New Zealand Cup meeting at Riccaron on November 19.. HoMitika passengers will travel to Greymouth by the usual 10.40 p.m. train on Friday, November 14, which will link up with a train to leave Grey mouth al 0.15 a.m. on Saturday, reaching Christchurch at 7 o’clock. The train on the return trip will leave on Saturday at 11.15 p.m. for Greymouth, arriving here at 6 a.m. on Sunday, and continuing to Hokitika where it is due to arrive at 7.21 a.m. A special train will leave Westport at 9.50 p.m. on November 18 reaching Christcurch at 7.52 the following day. Winners of a garden competition held recently by the Garden Circle of the Greymouth Townswomen’s Guild were.—Mrs A. L. McKay 234 points 1; Mrs E. V. Arthur 214 points 2; Mrs J. Truman 212 points 3. The judge was Mr R. P. Chfbnall. Mrs p. Joyce presided at a meeting held at the residence of Mrs E. Bunt. Theer were 18 members present and a new member was welcomed, also a visitor from Christhcurch. Mrs R. P. Chibnall gave a demonstration of the arrangement of arum lilies and basket decoration. A vote of thanks was passed to Mrs M. J. Fogarty, who presentede.a handsome cup for competition in the deem at.ve section. Mrs Bunt read a paper on root-rot in garden peas. Mrs A. Bremner won a lucky point competition. A small sum was raised from the bring and buy.

For the annual Merchant Navy street-day appeal at Greymouth on Friday, there was a moderate response. The proceeds were £3l 45., half the amount realised last year at Greymouth. The convener of the appeal, the Mayoress, Mrs F. F. Boustridge, reported extreme difficulty in obtaining collectors, and not all of the town was canvassed. The proceeds go to three societies, with headquarters in Wellington, who interest themselves in the welfare of seamen, the Flying Angels, Mission to Seamen, the Apostleship of the Sea and the British 'Sailors’ Society.

Misfortune overtook R. Skelton when he was sailing his new yacht “Gypsy” for the first time on the Grey River yesterday afternoon. The mast snapped in half in a strong easterly breeze, and in a scuffle that followed his forward hand fell overboard. Skelton quickly fished him out, and the pair manoeuvred the boat to lhe shore.

Instead of masks, as formerly on the Guy Fawkes anniversary, the fine evening on Saturday, both here and at Hokitika, witnessed discharges of rockets and similar fireworks together with a bon fire in each case on the beach.
