Peers Vote Against British Economy Policy
LONDON, November The House of Lords voted by 166 to 29 against a motion asking for approval of the Government’s policy of effecting economies totalling £280,000,000. The Conservatives have a big majority in the House of Lords. Their leader, Lord Salisbury, said the Government inspired confidence neither at home nor abroad. The Civil Aviation Minister, Lord Fakenham, said there would be no change in Government policy. PROPOSAL TO CUT ROYAL ANNUITIES The Prime Minister, Mr Attlee, rejected a suggestion by a Left Wing Labour member, Mr Emrys Hughes, in the House of Commons to-day, that the annuities paid to the British Royal Family should be cut. Mr Hughes urged this in view of the urgent heed for economy. He wanted a "hawk-like' eye” kept on all extravagance, he said. Annuities are granted to the King and other members of the Royal Family by Parliament for their State expenses. They include £llO,OOO for the King, and £40,000 for Princess Elizabeth,
