ANOTHER WAR IS PREDICTED BY AUSTRALIAN GENERAL
(Rec 11.50) MELBOURNE, Oct 13. “Russia wants world domination by Societ Communism. We have to get used to the fact that some of us will be involved in another war, said the chief of the General Staff, Lieu-tenant-General V. A. Sturdee, in an address to the British Empire Society to-day. “The only direct rival to Russia is the United States, and without her I don’t know what could be done.” General Sturdee added: “The United States must take the leadership of the Western Allies, and the British Empire must get used to being second fiddle.” If Russia judged the conditions suitable, she would go to war, he said, although she believed she could gain her ends by action short o’ war. “Russia does not believe that capitalism and Communism can live ir the same world.” He added that there is no basis for peace in a world divided by two irreconcilable ideologies, neither of which trusts the other.
West Europe Defences Satisfy Montgomery
LONDON, Oct. 12 Field Marshal Montgomery said to-day he was “very optimistic about the future of Western Union cooperation and integration.” Viscount Montgomery, who is chairman of the Western Union Commander-in-Chief Committee declared: “We have made remarkable progress—far beyond what would normally have been considered possible in peach time. We have achieved results which 15 or 20 years ‘ago would have appeared impossible to attain on this international basis.” The way operational procedure and equipment had been standardised was “significant.” He deprecated any tendency to lean, on the United States adding: “We must act first and get on with the business, and our very good friends will rally to our support in their own good time.” The aerodrome at Peenemunde, Germany’s war-time “secret weapon” experimental station, has been completely restored by the Russians. Two hundred Soviet aircraft, including 120 fighters, are now stationed there said the officer. Numerous Soviet four-engined bombers are shortly expected at the ai r base and nearby, the fishing village of Fallshagen has been taken over to house Soviet air force officers.
