CHEAPER SHEEP, BEEF AND PIGS UP AT ADDINGTON

P.A. CHRISTCHURCH, October 12. Sheep tended to be cheaper at Addington Market to-day, while smaller cattle and pig entries found prices firm.

Store Sheep: The entry totalled 2249, against 4048 last week. It included 994 hoggets, 845 ewes and lambs, and 410 wethers. In the hogget section last week’s prices were barely maintained. One pen of woolly wether hoggets made • 455. Medium to good shorn ewe hoggets made 30s to 35s 3d. Others were down to 28s. Medium to good wether hoggets sold up to 355. Others sold down to 28s. A good entry of ewes and lambs met a strong demand at prices about two shillings better than last week. Good ewes and lambs made 29s to 32s 6d, ordinary 25s to 27s 6d, and culls down to 225. ' Only one line of adult wethers was offered. The demand for smaller lines was restrained, with prices two shillings under those of last week. Good ones made 31s to 355, and others 28s to 30s.

Spring Lambs: The entry was 329, against 321 last week, and included many light types, showing signs of dry weather. Largely on account of the heavy entry, the prices were backone shilling. Best quality made to 52s Id, good 38s to 435, and medium and light 30s to 375. Fat Hoggets: The entry numbered 1276 compared with 807 a week ago. The entry included a large number of light hoggets, which mainly were taken by graziers. Butchers competed for top quality sorts. The all over prices declined by one to two shillings a head. The best quality made 46s to 51s 7d, good 37s to 44s and medium and light 32s to 365. Fat Sheep: The entry totalled 5200, against 5800 last week. Many old wethers in hard condition were offered. For these the market was dull. Prices were back up to three shillings a head. Good wethers and ewes sold steadily at last week’s prices. The best extra prime wethers were about one shilling cheaper. Values were: Extra prime heavy wethers to 54s 7d, prime wethers 43s to 48s, prime medium weight wethers 36s to 425, ordinary^and light wethers 30s to 355. Extra prime ewes sold to 43s Id, prime ewes 35s to 40s, prime medium weight ewes 30s to 345, ordinary and light ewes 24s to 295. Fat Cattle: The entry was 406, against 686 last week. There was a good showing of high quality beef. There was. an average rise of 20s to 30s a head. Best beef made to 82s 6d per 100 lbs, with some sales at 87s 6d; good 55s to 67s 6d; medium to 52s 6d; best cow to 655; secondary cow to 45fi. Values were: Extra prime heavjrsteers to £42 7s 6d, prime steers £26 to £29 10s, prime medium weight steers £l9 to £25 10s, ordinary and light steers £l4 10s to £lB 10s; extra prime heifers to £3O 17s 6d, prime heifers £l5 to £2O 10s, ordinary and light heifers £9 to £l4, extra prime cows to £l7 17s 6d, prime cows £l2 to £l9 10s, ordinary and plain cows £8 to £ll.

Pigs: In the porker section, the entry was much smaller than last week, and consisted mainly of medium and heavy weights. Prices were up by five to seven shillings. Choppers were yarded in medium numbers. They fully recovered the easing of last week. In the bacon section there were about 60 head. Prices rose by five to eight shillings. Values were: Light porkers £4 14s 6d to £5 2s 6d, medium porkers £5 4s 6d to £5 14s 6d, heavy porkers £5 19s fid to £6 14s 6d; average price per lb, 13d to 15d. Choppers sold from £6 16s to £l2 18s 6d; light-baconers £6 14s 6d to £7 2s 6d; medium baconers £7 4s 6d to £7 10s 6d; heavy baconers £7 12s 6d to £7 19s 6d; average price per lb, 10id to 12d.
