Southland Butchers Buying Beef In Outside Markets
P.A. INVERCARGILL, October 7. When Lie price controls were removed from meat. in. August, it was expected, in Southland, that there would be a sharp increase in the cost to the public. To date this increase has been confined to 3d per pound, which was added, at that time, to the price of beef. Fluctuating prices and irregular forwarding of cattle to sales in the province have caused acute shortages of beef for butchers for some time, according to an Invercargill representative of the trade. To supplement stocks available in Southland, butchers in the city have formed an organisation which, through agents, has been buying certain quantities of stock from Burnside ai d Addington. The buying done there on behalf of the organisation has been of prime quality ox beef. In spite of the fact that a certain quantity of this stock has included cattle that were sent to these northern markets by Southland vendors, the .purchases allow th e butchers to retail the meat at prices that compare favourably with the charges made for, the stock purchased at the Southland sales.
