SURVEYS OF COAL MEASURES IN WEST OF SOUTHLAND

P.A. INVERCARGILL, Octooer 7. About the middle of this month, a party of men from the Invercargill office of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research will leave to do regional mapping in the Western districts. The party will also investigate coal measures on the Hump Rtidge, between Port Craig and Lake Hauroko continuing where an expedition left last year. Mr A. C. Beck will lead the party. After the work in this area is finished, the party will survey between Lake Hauroko and Lake Monowai. After Christmas, there will be further surveying on the Wairaki downs in the Takatimu area.

Asked about the progress of the lignite coal fields, at Mataura, Mr Beck said that survey 1 work was still being done and about 20 holes had been drilled.
