Racecourse Barmen’s Allowances for Pies

WELLINGTON, October 4

A clause in the Licensed Hotel Workers’ Award puzzled the Arbitration Court to-day. “Where workers have to sustain themselves on meat pies, they shall be paid an allowance of 2s a day, read the clause.

“I bought some pies from a Government Department the other day and I think I should want 4s a day for eating them at all,” commented Mr Justice Tyndall.

Mr F. G. Young, secretary of the New Zealand Hotel Workers’ Federation, explained that the clause was for men working in racecourse bars.
