BADMINTON ST JOHN'S DEFEAT ST COLUMBA IN TEN OF TWELVE GAMES

Playing at St John’s hall last evening St Columba were defeated in tea of the twelve games by j John’s. Although the winning margins in most instances appear to be clear-cut, the games were more even than the scores might indicate. The matches proved most interesting and the various players displayed all the skill they have revealed in previous seasons. A noticeable feature in some of the matches appeared to be a lack of understanding between partners whereupon! their opponents awake to this made well of the opportunity to go quickly into a good lead. The lack of public interest in badminton is amazing for it has few equals as an indoor and for all that outdoor sport. In Tasmania where the game originated it is played with a rubber shuttle which tends to give more speed. Both in Australia and Tasmania the game has a very large following- and inter-StatO matches are in many circles looked upon as the ace sporting attraction of the year. Results of matches with St Johns players mentioned first were: — Women’s Doubles Mesdames H. Hutchison and Buchanan 21, Misses M. Quinn and I. Findlay 15; Mrs Tennent and Miss Swinburne 21, Misses G. Saunders and N. McGrath 8. Mesdames Stocker and Fraser 21, Misses L. Webster and M. McCarthy 6. Men’s Doubles W. Tennent and H. Hill 21, R. Egan and F. McGirr 5, H. Hutchison and J. Stocker 21, F.
