CARDINAL’S VISIT TO CHRISTCHURCH FOR CENTENNIAL
P.A. CHRISTCHURCH, Sept 29. His Lordship, Bishop Lyons, of Auckland has received advice that his Eminence Cardinal Gilroy, the Archbishop of Sydney, has accepted his invitation to attend the Catholic Centennial week, which is to be part of the Canterbury Centennial celebrations.
The Catholic Centennial week will begin on Sunday, November 12. 1950Since Cardinal Gilroy paid his last visit to New Zealand, in 1947. for the consecration of Archbishop McKeefry of Wellington, His Eminence has become a world figure, and he has been given important commissions for the Holy See. In- December last Cardinal Gilroy presided- as the Papal Legate at the National Celebrations in Japan to mark the four hundredth anniversary of the arrival in that country of Saint Francis Xavier.
On January 6, next, his Eminence will preside, as Papal Legate at the first plenary Council of the Bishops of India, to be held at Gangalore.
It is expetced that a number of overseas bishops will accompany the Cardinal at the Catholic Centennial week ceremonies in Christchurch, which will also be attended by the Archbishops and Bishops of New Zealand
