LARGE RISE IN N.Z. PRICES FOR HIDES AND SKINS
P.A. WELLINGTON, Sept. 29. A hide price notice gazetted tonight increases the price to be paid to the producer on all hides by fivepence per lb, or by approximately 5P per cent. The price to the producer on calfskins, other than freezer calf, remains unchanged. The domestic price to the New Zealand tanner has been increased to the same extent as the new price for the producers, with the exception of calfskins, which have been increased by fourpence per lb. Formerly there were varying prices to the tanner for four different weight ranges of ox hide's, but in future one price will operate for all weights, with the exception of yearlings.
The export levy rates have been adjusted to maintain as nearly as possible the nrice to the producer at the new level.
The Stabilisation Department, in an explanation, states that, when the meat export schedule (which covers the whole carcase, including offal) was increased to meet the cost increases, it was decided that part of the increase should be placed on hides. This war don e in order that the increase in the local market price of beef should not be too great.
