BIGGER PORT FOR AUCKLAND
AUCKLAND, September 27. The reclamation of at least 900 acres of land from the upper harbour, to provide Auckland’s great new extension may be undertaken by overseas contractors. The chairman of the Auckland Harbour Board (Mr W. F. McCallum) said the board’s engineer (Mr N. L. Vickerman) now on an overseas tour, had been instructed to see if contractors from any part of the Empire or from Holland could be interested in the scheme. The board's plan was not adequate for such a major task. Preparations for the development of a 2’5-berth port between Point Chevalier and Te Atatu have been given impetus by the passage through the House of Representatives on Thursday of the board’s Auckland Harbour Development Bill, vesting 6900 acres of the harbour bed in the board. The estimated cost of preparing breakworks, reclamation and dredging is £5,120,000. Berthage will cost another £3,052,000.
