Harihari Women’s Institute

The nineteenth birthday of the Harihari Women’s institute was held on the evening of August 17. The president welcomed all tne members and visitors. Mrs J. Searle presented the president with a posy of violets. Birthday buttonholes were presented to Mesaames F. Minehan, J. Ferguson and L. Robertson. The Institute silver cup was presented to Mis D. Graham for the aggregate prize for the > ear, this cup is being contested every year. Beautiful cup-saucer and plate sets were presented to Mrs D. Graham for the most points in cooking; to Mrs F. Wyatt tor most points in the flower section; and to Mrs W. McLaren for handiwork. Competitions and games were enjoyed by all after winch supper was served by six hostesses. The candles on the cake were lit and blown out by Mrs Routhan (WataroaJ, Miss Margaret Graham (Waiho) and Miss Meiva Adamson. The cake was cut by the .oldest member, Mrs Graham.

The evening was brought to a close with everyone singing “Auld Lang Syne”.

Ross Women’s Institute The Ross Women’s Institute held their sixteenth birthday party on August 11, the President welcoming a very merry crowd of members in ‘‘back’ to childhood” costumes. A full programme, of games and competitions was en.ioyed Dy all. .The winner of the “Wandering Shilling” was Mrs R. Donaldson. A five-minute sketch, “The Charladies’ 1 ' was presented during the. evening by Mesdames W. Leggott and W. Leslie. Many useful articles oi clothing were received lor the. Corso appeal. An appeal wast made for articles of furniture, household utensils for two displaced .Polish families who have come to reside in Ross. An excellent supper was served by the committee. Mrs Graham, an ex-mem-ber, of Harihari Institute, lit the 16 candles. Mrs May, the official pianist, blew them out and Miss Margaret Graham, of Franz Josef cut the birthday cake. The “Lucky Cup was won by Mrs Hedwig. The evening concluded with the singing of Auld Lang Syne” and the National Anthem.
