HOKITIKA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent) HOKITIKA, Aug 22. The motor launch Cascade is still held at Hokitika owing to heavy seas. The launch will leave as soon as conditions permit. Cement- is in very short supply at Hokitkia owing to the absence of shipping. In order to keep important jobs going, it was necessary to obtain a special permit to secure supplies from Tarakohe. The “Hauiti” is expected to leave Wellington this week for Hokitika. The vessel has not entered this port for some time. Visiting players for the table tennis championships, while scanning shop windows on Saturday morning, noticed smoke in one of the local shops. They advised other people or their suspicions, and the manager was called. On investigation the cause of the smoke was found to be a kapoc pillow smouldering. _ It was fortunate these visitors noticed the smoke.

Although nlayers were handicapped by a glass-like surface of the dance floor of the R.S.A. Hall, the local table tennis championships produced excellent games. The winner of the men’s singles, J. Robinson dominated the event. R. Hodgkinson was the only opponent to open the game up to any extent. The winners were:— . Ladies’ Singles.—Miss M. Jones; men’s singles, J. Robinson; ladies' doubles, Misses M. Jones and M Roberts; men’s doubles. E. Stoop and R. Parker; combined doubles, L. East and Miss M. Groufsky; boys single? D. Wilson.

E. Stoon, in winning the men’s doubles, after plaving in the Dittman Shield match, d’d well. Miss M. Jones deserved her win being sound on defence with a good variety of attacking shots. With Miss M. Roberts in the doubles she formed a good combination. The men’s doubles match between Stoop and Parker and T. and R. Roberts wa~ the best of the series ■ The steady play of L. East and the forehand attack of Miss M. Groufsk’ brought about the defeat of Keown and Miss P. Murphy in the final o. the combined doubles.
