SOCCER Westland Continue On Winning Way

A somewhat disappointing crowd wer e treated to a good exhibition of soccer at Victoria Park on Saturday, when t Westland maintained their unbroken record by defeating Buller by 5 goals to 2, thus retaining the Emms Shield. The ground was in good order, apart from a few patches where the surface was inclined to be greasy. Neither side had any material advantage in the first spell, which was rather dull. At the changeover, however, proceedings took a sudden change, and play became fast, with some brilliant . footwork being displayed. Westland finished off their attacks in a more polished manner than theii’ opponents. The Buller goalkeeper, Moore, was called upon to save, and this he did repeatedly and in no uncertain manner. T. Blythe, at centrehalf, played a grand game in the Buller backs. Likewise Geddes was most, effective in the full backs. C. Steele, at inside left, was outstanding in the Buller forwards. McNaught, at left wing, proved very elusive, and had good control of the ball. Coates, the right wing, missed several opportunities, being a weak link in his line. Moynihan and Trotter were both up to the class. Without exception the whole of the Westland forward line was favourably commented on. It would be hard to individualise, though Scott, who netted two goals, was worthy of special mention. In the backs, T. Kirk at left half, and R. Lee at full-back, wer e always well positioned, and placed the ball to good effect. J. Perrin was not called upon to save nearly so often as his opposing number, but he showed ability when the occasion arose. The teams were:—

Westland: J. Ferrin; R. Lee, J. Clarke; J. Kerr, T. Kirk, R. Nuttall; G. Glen, A. Boyd, R. Scott, B. Hassan, and W. Ward. .

Buller Moore; Geddes, Fox; Moynihan, Blythe, Trotter; Coates, Crackett, Steele, Fitzsimmons and McNaught. Scott secured th e only goal in the first half, to give Westland a one-goal lead. Steele equalised for Buller early in the second spell, but soon after Hassan, Scott, Boyd and Glen all netted for Westland. The final points came from a free kick from which Steele made no mistake in finding the net, making the score: Westland 5; Buller 2; which remained unchanged at the final whistle. Mr A. Pickering was referee. WEEK-END DRAW The following matches have been arranged for the week-end:— Senior:— Blackball v. Taylorville, at Blackball (G. Lindley); Runanga v. Greymouth, at Runanga (J. Timlin); Reefton a bye. Owing to no players being available, Cobden most reluctantly has been forced to withdraw from the competition. Anyone interested in sport, whether he may have played soccer previously or not, should contact th e Cobden Qlub, where his services would most gladly be accepted. At this stage of the season it would not show the district up in a favourable light in the world of sport of a team has to withdraw on account of lack of players. Sportsmen, here’s your opportunity to help in a worthwhile cause. Schoolboys— As the West Coast team leave today for the Dominion tourney, there will be no schoolboy matches at the, week-end. Petone Beat Eden in Chatham Cup Semi-Final P.A. WELLINGTON, Aug 21. Before a crowd of over 8000 Petone scored an easy win by four goals to nil, against Eden (Auckland) in the North Island Chatham Cup re-play yesterday, and they now enter the final, to be played next week. Although Petone was, generally, superior, wild shooting by the Eden forwards, who did not lack scoring opportunities, made their task lighter.
