HYDRO POWER FROM TASMANIA FOR THE MAINLAND
HOBART, Aug. 20The Common wealth Government is considering the development of hy-dro-electric poweF on Tasmania’s west coast for transmission to the mainland. Announcing this, Senator C. A. Lamp said that the scheme would cost at least £400,000,000 and would include the harnessing of five rivers. Senator Lamp first suggested the
scheme to the Commonwealth two years ago, but impetus has now been given the proposal by the coal problem. The power would go to Western Victoria and South Australia. Senator Lamp said that at present Tasmania had developed only from 6 to 8 per cent of its potential electrical energy. There would be no difficulty in ‘making a suitable type ot cable to transmit this power unaer Bass Strait. „ , , ... , Giving an idea of the benefits of the scheme. Senator Lamp said that its institution would obviate the necessity of South Australia having to import 261,000 tons of coal a veai over, a distance of 1000 miles from Newcastle.
