CRICKET THREE N.Z. BATSMEN MAKE CENTURIES AGAINST DURHAM

LONDON, August 18. New Zealand batsmen showed what they could do against mediocre bowling when they hit up 417 for. three wickets (declared) in the first innings against Durham at Sunderland. Scott, Smith and Mooney scored centuries and 400 came up in just over four hours. . . . Rabone partnered Scott in giving the New Zealanders a good start with an opening stand of 138. Smith and Mooney especially thrilled the . crowd when they came together, adding an unbeaten 2'lB runs in 122 -minutes. Mooney hit 15 boundaries and Smith 14. F. R. Brown, the England captain, in a statement, said: “I have enjoyed the. two tests in which I have played. We could not have wished to have played against a more sporting side. We must congratulate them on their fine performances in. all four tests, and I am sure that in future New Zealand must be considered for longer tests in this country. On the pitches prepared to-day it is extremely difficult to finish a test in three days”. The Daily Mail said: “‘There is np doubt that the New Zealanders’ cricket has vastly improved since they were last here in 1937. They set out to prevent England from winning in the tests, and they succeeded—an achievement which must guarantee four-day tests in future”. The Daily Mirror said: ‘‘So the curtain has fallen on a series that must have brought some of the biggest yawns in test history. This last game was the best of an almost farcical series, in which, for the first time, all the games were drawn” (Rec. 11.30) LONDON, Aug. 19 In the cricket match at 1 1 a.m. G.M.T., Durham in their first innings had lost 5 for 108.
