GREYMOUTH BRANCH OF NATIONAL COUNCIL OF WOMEN

Mrs Stewart presided over the monthly meeting of the Greymouth Branch of. the National Council of Women. The matter of safety in children’s cots was discussed. For the information of mothers and others interested, it was pointed out that if a cot carries the Standard mark, it must conform to the following specifications: Spacing of slats and rungs in cots and play-pens shall not exceed 21 inches in the clear, and all edges shall be smoothly rounded. Fittings and catches must be strong and securely attached." The internal height specified is 221 inches. Thus the Standard mark is an adequate safeguard for those purchasing cots and play-pens. With reference to other remits, it was pointed out there are on the market at least two N.Z.-made nonshrink brands of woollen goods, and also one imported brand of knitting wool. With regard to moth-proof garments, it is known that, although New Zealand mills are interested in this problem, it is not yet placed on a commercial basis.

Regarding a remit asking for flour containing 100 per cent, wheat berry to be made available, the home science school at Dunedin advised that one has to ask for whole meal flour. This, when available, does contain 100 per cent, wheat berry. Mrs Brown was appointed liaison officer from the Branch to United Nations Assn, of N.Z. The treasurer reported that the nett amount from the shop day was over £l6. It was unanimously voted that £5 of this amount be donated to headquarters, where there is serious concern about the financial position. The president thanked the committee and others who had helped in this effort. The secretary reported that November 29 was the date set for the annual social afternoon. The remainder of the afternoon was ■ occupied by a very interesting address by Mr Holdgate, speech therapist, who spoke of the scope, causes, and treatment of speech defects, and mentioned a number of ways in which parents and others could co-operate to prevent or limit such defects. He was accorded a very hearty vote of thanks. WOMEN’S INSTITUTES Rapahoer— At the August meeting of the Rapahoe Institute, Mrs Spruce presided, Mrs Howard being unable to attend through illness. All members joined in wishing the president a speedy recovery. An invitation was received from Greymouth Institute for its twentieth birthday party. Remits for the half-yearly council meeting were discussed? The motto was read by Mrs Wafer. The roll call, ‘My Favourite Holiday Resort,” w’as well responded to. A. 'much appreciated demonstration on tatting was given by Miss P. Langney. Competitions resulted: Novelty pin cushion: Mrs Thompson 1, Mesdames Noble and Spruce equal 2. Open jam tart: Mesdames Thompson and Noble equal 1. A dainty supper was served by the hostess, Mesdames Thompson and Tangney. Kaiata The August meeting of the Kaiata Institute was held in the schoolroom recently, Mrs Milne presiding over a fair attendance. A new member was welcomed. The president extended a welcome to Mrs Barker (president of the West Coast Federation) and to Miss Iris Barker, also to members of the Dunollie Institute. Mrs Barker read the motto for the month, “To-day is the To-morrow you worried about Yesterday, and all is well.” Miss Barker demonstrated the making of rope sandals for beach wear. Mrs D. Steel was the winner of the mystery parcel. A presentation was made to Mrs Nicholson in appreciation of her services to the Institute. Birthday greetings were extended to Mrs Coom. Competition winners were as follows: —Pretties (a cup and saucer): Mrs Faulkner 1. Miss D. Cox 2, Mrs Becker and Mrs Cron equal 3; cushion cover: Mrs Faulkner 1, Mrs Dowling 2, Mrs Cron 3; cheese scones: Mrs O. Cameron 1, Mrs Faulkner 2, Mrs Milne 3. The social half-hour was “Sing, say or 3d pay.” Hostesses for the evening were Mesdames Nicholson, Butler and Miss Norah Nicholsen.

Karoro: — The monthly meeting of the Karoro Women’s Institute was held in the Baptist Sunday School, Mrs Batty presiding over a good attendance. A large number of packets of “Shreddo” were donated for the Institute’s link in England. The president and Mrs D. Dunwoodie were elected sick visitors for the month. . Mrs Clements, a visitor, gave an interesting demonstration of the making of a fascinator head scarf. The roll call (a Limerick about a member) caused much amusement, and a debate “Long v .Short Hair” was very interesting. Competition winners were Bloom: Mrs Troubridge 1, Mrs Watson 2, Mrs Shepherd 3. Yeast buns: Mrs Murray 1, Mrs R. Dunwoodie 2; article from a yard of print, Mrs Sheoherd 1 Mrs Reynolds 2, Mrs Trowbridge 3. Owing to the limited space in the Sunday school, meetings will be held in the United Pavilion in future.

B LAK ETOWN Mrs Innis presided over a good attendance at the monthly meeting oi the Blaketown Women’s Institute. The aspirations were read by Mrs West. The Roll Call: A Country I would like to visit was well responded to and caused much amusement. Nominations and remits were submitted for the half-yearly federation meeting. > Competition winners were: Leeks: Mrs Richardson 1; Mrs Muschamp 2; Mrs Todd 3. Tomato sauce: Mrs Manson 1; Mrs Oakley 2; Mrs Fitzpatrick 3. Crotcheted table centre Airs Bowkett 1; Mesdames Dixon and Marley 2; Miss Web?er 3. A box of chocolates, donated by Mrs Stewart. of Christchurch, was won by Mrs McEnaney. The meeting concluded with sup’ ’per and a social half-hour.
