MELBOURNE.—Before the end of the 1948-49 racing season in Victoria —the season ends on July 31 —totalisator investments had reached a record for Victoria of £A8.454,061, invested at galloping and trotting meetings during the season in Melbourne. The amount was £A751,932m0re than investments at gallons and night trotting during the 1947-48 season. Totalisator wagering was first introduced In Melbourne in August, 1931, and for the 1931-32 season investments totalled £916.793 15s. Introduction of night trotting in Melbourne in 1947 increased totalisator turnover. During the 1948-49 trotting season, more than £A1,000,000 passed through the tote windows. The record turnover on the tote at one meeting in Melbourne was £232,304 ss, established in the 1945 Melbourne Cup meeting. Record figure for a race meeting in Australia—£A24B,4BB—was established at Randwick racecourse in Sydney in 1948.—Reuter.
