POLIO SWEEPING UNITED STATES AND WORSE FEARED
(Rec. 10 5) NEW YORK, Aug. 2. An infantile paralysis epidemic is sweeping the United States. It has resulted in at leasteight thousand cases this year up to July 31. With August and September—normally months of the heaviest incidence—still to come, it is feared tliat 1949 may Drove theh worst poliomyletis year in United States history. A record was set in 1916, when about thirty' thousand cases were reported. T he second worst year was 1948 with 27,680 cases.
