Fly in Antarctic Winter
CANBERRA. —An ordinary housefly has been discovered on Heard Island, in the sub-Antarctic, which is in the grip of winter, with average temperatures well below freezing point. A report received in Canberra, from the Australian Scientific Expedition on Heard Island, said that there has been a keep debate on whv one fly—and only one—should suddenly have appeared six months after the departure of the relief ship. The life-span of the house-fly is only a few days. A biologist on the island said he thought the appearance of the fly might be due to sudden warmth applied to larvae which had been in a state of arrested development.—Reuter.
