Buller Schools

Nelson Education Board at its recent meeting received a tender from Kawatiri Construction Company for the erection of a teacher’s residence at Stockton, also a tender for the remodelling of Stockton School. The Board decided to apply to the Department for authority to accept. An application was received from three parents of children attending Cape Foulwind school for the school to be closed and the children conveyed to Westport South School. A parent wrote objecting. It was decided that Hon. W. H. Mclntyre (Chairman) address the Cape residents in favour of consolidation on June 1. The chairman stated that as regards a site for the four-classroom block for the secondary department at Reelton District High School, the Department considered a site of 15 acres chosen by the Board was too small and suggested a site of five to six acres. The Board referred the matter to the chairman secretary and architect for investigation when they visit Reefton on June 2. It was decided not to proceed with the erection of the proposed two-classroom block on the present site. Repairs required at Millerton and Westport North schools were authorised. The Department notified the transfer of Mr. K. H. O’Halloran, Inspector of Schools, from Nelson to Auckland. The chairman fairwelled Mr. O’Halloran on behalf of the Board and presented him with a fountain pen.

The architect reported plans were nearing completion for manual training building at Murchison, dental clinics at Secidonville and Inangahua Junction Schools and a contract was signed for the installing of a septic tank at the head teacher’s residence at Denniston.

The resignation of Qlr. J. E. Banks, assistant teacher, Vyestport' North, and Miss. V. D. Bolitho, assistant teacher, Murchison, were accepted. Mr. Alan L. Dewer, head teacher, Ormondville, was appointed head teacher at Granity District High School from seven applicants.
