The Grey River Dredge return for the clean-iip period to March 23, was 204.2 crude ounces of gold, recovered in 224 hours 55 minutes’ from 147,911 cubic yards excavated.

About 325,000 tons of limestone was brought down in the Wilson Portland Cement Company’s quarry at Portland by a blast of 32 tons of explosive. Similar shots are tired every 18 months. The limestone is mechanically loaded on trucks and taken to the cement works.

It appears that the first prize in a well-known overseas lottery is coming almost regularly to New Zealand. In a consultation drawn last Wednesday “Tui”, Westfield, won the first prize of £lO,OOO. Three other major prizes came to New Zealand—-the fourth of £lOOO to “Faith,” Lower Hutt, the fifth of £750, to “All for Us” syndicate, Wellington, and the seventh of £290 to “Ben’s Luck,” Collingwood.

A start was made yesterday morning with the painting and repairing of the railway station at Greymouth. The work was delayed when the Royal tour of New Zealand and Australia was cancelled earlier in the year. Renovations will be made as the painting work progresses. The work, will probably take several weeks to complete, it was stated yesterday. Other West Coast stations are also being repaired and painted.

At least three rabbits, two white and one brown, are running loose on Cobden Island, and, as a doe is thought to be included, a breach of the Rabbit Nuisance Act, 1928 has been committed. The rabbits have apparently been kept by someone as pets and liberated on the island recently. An official of the Department of A.griculture said that the person responsible, U apprehended was liable to a fine of £5O or six months imprisonment, under the provisions of section 101 of the rabbit Nuisance Act. 1928. The KokatahiKoiterangi district is the only area on the West. Coast where rabbits have existed in large numbers. In recent years, however, the pest has been kept well in check. Arahura Valley was, apart from Kokatahi the next most popular locality for rabbit shdoters and combined with floods, the sportsmen have helped to keep the animals in check.
