Varied Reactions to Atlantic Pact
LONDON, March 21. Field Marshal Viscount Alexander, Governor-General of Canada, speaking to-day at the University of California at Los Angeles, said the North Atlantic Treaty is “the best way of insuring against a third world war.” He added: "It is heartening that the Western nations are at last moving towards a policy of mutual defence. There are certain forces in the world to-day .yvhich are extremely evil and dangerous. Unless we combine to resist them we shall lose the heritage our forefathers handed down to us.” DEMONSTRATIONS IN ITALY ROME, March 31. The Ministry of the Interior announced that the police used tear gas and 11 persons, including four police, were wounded during anti-Atlantic Pact demonstrations at Lovello, near Potenza. ATTITUDE TO SPAIN PARIS, March 21. A Foreign Office spokesman, commenting on reports that Spain might be invited to join the Atlantic Pact, said France would oppose Spain’s inclusion while the Franco Government remained in office.
