LATE BULLER NEWS

Two sports gatherings at Westport are at present timed for Saturday, March 5, and it looks as if one should give way. The Swimming Club has arranged a carnival, with teams to come from Greymouth, Denniston and Millerton. One the same date, however, the Westport Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club intends to hold its Buller championship meeting, at which it expects some Christchurch cyclists to compete. If no visitors are competing at the sports it might only be reasonable for the Swimming Club to ask for a postponement until a later date. Because of the late arrival of the first play on the 1949 list, the Westport Dramatic Society will open the season this evening in the Community Centre, with J. B. Priestley’s “Laburnam Grove,” the story of a suburban family of rather selfish people, who are taught a sharp lesson by the head of the house. This typica'l Priestley comedy provides a surprise in an excellently-contrived last act. The play-reading, which is being produced by Hilda Atkinson, has the following cast Elsie Radfern, Ellen Simpson; Mrs Lucy Baxley, Olive Bascand; Bernard Baxley, John Caskie; George Radfern, Harold Maitland; Harold Russ, Murray Fyfe; Joe Fletten, Norman Daly; Mrs Dorothy Radfern, Jean Mathewson; Inspector Stack, Wells McKechnie; Sergeant Morris, Roy Dawber.
