CRICKET WEST COAST ASSOCIATION MEETS

Mr R. D. Gillespie presided, last J evening, at the fortnightly meeting, of the West Coast Cricket Association when the following members attended —Messrs W. McNeish, L. P Coffey, S. Garforth, R. Vernon. R. Lee ano A. Knapp. Apologies were received from Messrs W. Meates and R. Do'naldson. The Christchurch Suburban Association wrote requesting a match against West Coast. It was decided to submit March 19 and 20 as suitable dates.

Waimea Association (Nelson) advised that they had beaten .Nelson for th*e Newman Shield, inviting a challenge, should thev be successful in retaining the trophy against Marlborough. They also advised that the idea of a Seddon Shield seres inteested them, and enquired as to whether they could participate.

After discussion, it was decided tc. inform Waimea Association that the West Coast Asociation was already committed to playing Nelson province. and as a result players would be unable to obtain sufficient time oT to travel to Nelson again.. In regard to the Seddon Shield trophy, it was decided that the competition was to be confined to provincial represent.ative teams only, and thus Waimea was not eligible. The Saturday junior competition was declared closed, with Cobden the winners. It was decided to commence a new competition for the remainder of the season and to include in it Mar’s! High School second eleven. Marist High ‘School was granted permission to plav it annua) fixture against Hokitika District High School. POSTPONED GAMES It was decided that the postponed Barlow Cup and Ogilvie Shield games be held on February 26. The transfer of T. Pfahlert from Marist to Kaimoto was granted. Brunner Club sought permission to play friendly games against Reefton teams, and this was granted subject to Sunday fixtures. The club also sought permission for a testimonial game for Mr A. Hoggarth, an old Brunner player, between Brunner and a team picked from the rest of the club.

An application from the Runanga club to nlay J. Baddelev whilst h? was in the district on holiday was granted. It was decided that the Nelson Creek v. Marist game, set down for January 29, be declared a draw. These clubs were granted permission to plav a friendly game on Sunday if desired.

Grey Motors at Rec No. 1 England’s Advantage in Test at Cape CAPETOWN, Feb 14. Athol Rowman, usually one of South Africa's safest fieldsmen, dropped a costly catch soon after play had begun on the second day of the fourth test at Johannesburg. Watkins, whom Rowan dropped at G 5 went on to make 111, his first, test century, before he lost his wicket. He batted 220 minutes and hit 15 fours.

The M.C.C. took its score to 379 before the innings ended. Incautious running by Eric Rowan cost South Africa two cheap wickets and soon after lunch three wickets were down for only 19 runs. Nourse and Wade, however, then got on top of the attack and their fourth wicket stand of 106 saved South Africa from collapse. South Africa had lost seven wickets for 161 at stumps, in reply to England’s first innings total of 379.
