Great Heat and Heavy Gales at Sydney

(Rec. 9.5) SYDNEY. Dec. 19 Following a day when the temperature reached ninety-four decimal six degrees on Friday, the city of Sydney experienced a violent freak storm late on Saturday. The heat on Friday caused one death and caused many people to collapse. On Saturday during the storm, the water police rescued fifty-one people from over-turned small craft in the harbour. Eight ships in nort dragged their anchors, and signalled for help. Many roofs were stripped from the houses'in outlying suburbs of Sydney. A fierce westerly wind had suddenly changed to a southerly gale, which kicked up ten foot waves in Sydney harbour. The earlier heat buckled forty-five feet of the railway track at north Sydney station, and halted the traffic. Bush fires raged throughout the day, but fortunately most of them were under control by the time the gale arrived.
