Man Admits Theft Front Hokitika Hotel
While a woman was asleep, a man entered her bedroom, and stole £24 18s Gd from beneath her pillow, according to evidence heard by Messrs E. Q Henry and R. A.Stewart, J.’sP., in Greymouth Police Court yesterday. The man was Robert Alexander Gilmer, alias Robert Care Lee, 30, marine engineer, who pleaded guilty to a charge of theft, and was committed to the Supreme Court at Christchurch for sentence. Zilla Jessie McLean, wife of the i: censee of the Commercial Hotel, Hokitika, said that when she put the bar takings, amounting to £24 18s 6d. in a canvas bag on October 17, Gilmer was in the bar. She placed the ’ag beneath her pillow, and in the morning it was found at the foot of the stairs.
Detective-Sergeant. N. Thompson sa’d that when interviewed. Gilmer admitted the theft. He said he did not know what he had done with the bag after taking the money. If he had not been drinking, he would not have committed th? offence, he add--d.
Gilmer was also charged with breaking and entering the shop _of Munns, Ltd., Colombo Street, Christchurch, on October 3, and stealing £250. Gilrner was remanded to Christchurch on Friday.
