REPORTED PLOT TO KILL FRANCO
MADRID, October 17. It is reliably reported that the police are investigating a plot in the province of Salamanca, allegedly by Communist terrorists, against the life of General Franco. The plot would have been carried out during General Franco’s return from a visit to Portugal originally planned for • this month, but postponed.. The police said a mine was to have been laid and exploded under a bridge over which General Franco’s car would have passed. Advocate of Anti-Franco Policy (Rec. 11.40) LONDON, Oct. 18 The Manchester Guardian published an open letter by Don . Salvador De Madariaga, a Spanish Liberal and author to General Marshall warning the American Secretary of State that dollars could not stop the Communist flood. He said: “Spain is a test case for the west, as Japan was a test case for the League. By condemning Franco Spain, you will conquer’ the heart of millions of Europeans who have been taught to distrust American motives.” _
