Mr I. Thompson returned to yes-1 terday to Christchurch. Miss H. O’Brien, of Cobden, left yesterday for Wellington. Mr W. M. Stewart left for Christchurch last evening. Messrs W. Mumm and R. Hawes, Westport, left last evening for Christchurch to take part in the All Black trial in Christchurch to-morrow. Mesdames W. Boucher and R. Anderson left for Christchurch yestei> day. Mr P. B. Roche, who has been appointed to u position with Scottish Airways, left Greymouth yesterday en route to Prestwick, Scotland. Mr. A.« A. Reid, formerly surveyor of the Blackwater Mines, has heen appointed General Manager of the Chagrin Chrome and Nichel Coy. New Caledonia. The Rev. F'. Trim, of Wesley Church, Reefton, has been appointed to the Lyttelton charge. He will leave in October, and will be succeeded by the Rev. Mr. Barber. The Grey Electric Power Board yesterday appointed Messrs D. J. Dunwoodie (Karoro), and J. R. Huston (Greymouth) as metre readers, from fifteen applications. The appointment of Messrs C. U. Bethell, W. Horrobin and H. J. Wardell as members of the New Zealand ' Wool Board were Gazetted last night.—P.A. Mr C. M. Forsyth-Smith has been appointed Assistant Commercial Secretary to the High Commissioner for Canada, states a notice in last .night’s Gazette. —P.A. Mr F. D. Barnett was appointed to act an Honorary Vice-Cunsul tor Uruguay at Wellington, according to the Gazette last night. — The appointment of Mr E. M. Beechey to act as Deputy .for tne Chief Judge of the Maori Land Court from September 4 to October 26, was Gazetted last night.—P.A. The death occurred at Timaru yesterday of Mr Herbert Elworthy, at the age of 70. He was a well-known South Island pastoralist, and one of the largest wool producers in the Dominion. Closely connected for many years with racing and hunting in South Canterbury, he was earlier one of New Zealand’s best amateur horsemen. He was a Director of the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company—P.A. The Prime Minister announced last night that the Commissioner of Police, Mr James Cummings, is going to England at the end of the month to discuss the security arrangements for the Royal tour. He will also confer with Scotland Yard and the police authorities on general questions of security and police methods.—Press Assn. A prominent figure in radio in Gisborne for over twenty years, Mr Charles Thomas Clifford Hands, manager of the Gisborne radio station, 2XG, formerly 2ZJ, died yesterday in the Cook Hospital, which he entered a week ago. He was 49 years of age. Born at Ohaka, near Rangiora, Mr Hands came to Gisborne shortly after his marriage. An excellent radio' technician, he was one of the earliest amateurs. He established a B station, which later was absorbed by the national network. He was well known all over the world by radio amateurs. He served in the R.N.Z.A.F. as a radio technician in the Second world War. He is survived by his wife, a son, and a daughter.—Press Assn. Chief Detective J. Gibson, officer in charge of the Detective Branch at Invercargill, has been selected by the Commissioner of Police, to visit Australia under an agreement for a temporary exchange of police officers between Australia and New Zealand. The agreement was incorporated in the Police Force Act last year, and this is the first time that it has been put into operation. Four officers from New Zealand have been selected. Chief Detective Gibson, who will lead the delegation, will be accompanied by Detective Sergeant .W. R. Fell, of Auckland, and two members of the Women’s Division of the Police Force. They will sail from Dunedin early next week by the steamer Temple Inn. The party will undergo a course of police work in one principal centre in Australia, and will be absent from New Zealand for three months.— Press Assn. ________
