WORLD COUNCIL OF CHURCHES MEETS

AMSTERDAM, August 22. The first assembly of the World Council of Churches was formally opened in Amsterdam’s historic New Church. A total of 145 church bodies m 42 countries ’were represented by 1200 clerics and laymen. The Pope is represented by an observer. Russia declined an invitation to attend. Hungarian and Estonian delegates are attending the 14-day assembly which begins work on August 23.
