T. R. O’Callaghan’s One Hundred Points WELLINGTON, Aug. 23. T. R. O’Callaghan, vice-captain of the Wellington representative Rugby team against Hawke’s Bay, passed on Saturday his century in points scored this season. The Marist and former West Coast player has played in 12 championship matches to score 62 points and in four representative matches in which he has scored 45 points. He has scored six tries and kicked 28 conversions and 11 penalties. For the first of the home-and-home representative matches against Auckland at Auckland next Saturday, the sole selector, Mr R. J. Morgan, has decided to retain the same Wellington side which defeated Hawke’s Bay, with the exception that V Bevan is now available and returns to the halfback position. The individual brilliance of G. W. Delamore, who scored one try and paved the way for two others and also I kicked a field goal, was the highlight of a free-scoring game at Athletic Park on Saturday, in which Wellington beat Hawke’s Bay by 37 points to 14. Delamore’s speed off the mark and perfect handling have rarely been excelled. He received excellent support from T. R, O’Callaghan, who scored 16 points, to bring his tally in four representative games this season to 45. Injuries before and during the game weakened the Hawke’s Bay side. Wellington lost W. Dougan through injuries. Hokitika Matches Excelsiors had a points margin of fourteen in their win over Kiwis on Saturday, but the play was more even than the figures suggest, and the losers had not. much luck. Walker played an outstanding game for Excelsiors. Often he was forced to go after Kiwi backs to halt their advances. M. Wells opened the score within 90 seconds oi the kick-off and it looked a good thing for Excelsiors. The next score did not come so easy. The forward play was hard, and pretty even, with Kiwis possibly the better. The winners excelled in the backs. Kiwis started without R. Stoop, Hurren going as the wing, but when later he went to halt he received a knock and had to go off. R. Stoop replaced him, while Ron Eastgate, who had been at first five-eighths went into the forwards. Andrews, the Excelsior half, had to retire injured, being replaced by R. Teller, who did creditably, scoring a try and making opening for two more tries, one when he evaded several tacklers and sent Bretherton over. Walker, Weiblitz and Wells got the other.tires. In the Excelsior pack A. Adamson stood out, while R. Weiblitz, M. Wells, R. Godfrey and Campbell combined well. A. Wallace did well as full-back for the winners. Kiwis missed Hurren. M. Stoop did all he had the opportunity of doing, while Parkinson failed to reproduce his good form of the previous week. J. Tullock did well at full-back. C. Lewis was Kiwis best rucker, while R. and P. Eastgate, McLean, and Leslie worked hard. F. Sweeney was tireless, and with more weight would advance in the code. C. Murphy hooked capably. Mr A. V. O’Brien was the referee. Ross won the Junior Knock-out Cup by holding St. Mary’s to a drew. K. Foster secured a try for Ross, while P. Tinetti secured one for St. Mary’s. Neither side was at its best. St. Mary’s backs lacked penetration, while Ross backs, except Foster gave a poor display. Both sets of forwards worked well, St. Mary’s having the better. Tinetti’s try was a real good effort. He came through with the ball at his toe, when he kicked hard the ball rebounded, and he snapped it up to pass the Ross full-back to score. Foster is one of the gamest wingers in the competition. On Saturday he had to run back a bit, and this cost ground at times, but he had to make his own play, though he had a day off with his kicking. -
