Distilling Illicit Spirits Brings Heavy Fines

AUCKLAND, Aug. 23. For operating two stills in a garage at his home in Epsom and haying a large quantity of spirits in his possession, Owen Robert Thomas, aged 40, a builder, was lined £250 in the Police Court at Auckland to-day. .Tack Rayner, aged 48, a carpenter, was fined £75 for conveying spirits on which duty had not been paid. Each was fined £25 for keeping liquor for sale without a licence. Both pleaded guilty. The magistrate, Mr H. Jenner Wily said Rayner had served a term, of imprisonment in 1944> for keeping liquor for sale, but in view of his health he would not be imprisoned this time. Thomas was a first offender. *
