COMPETITIONS OPEN WITH OVER 1100 COMPETITORS

The Greymouth Competitions Society's 34th. annual festival got away to a good start yesterday when many sections were completed at the three halls engaged, St. Columba, St. John’s and Wesley. More than 1100 entries have been received for the festival which will concluded on Thursday next. A high standard of performance was noted by the judges yesterday, and last evening’s recalls, presented at the Wesley Hall .attracted a good attendance, ’ who were treated to an interesting evening’s entertainment. OPENING BY MAYOR The fact that this was the 34th. annual festival made them realise that they had., in Gleymouth, a socity which not only promoted the arts, but which had withstood the test of time, the Mayor, Mr F. F. Boustridge, said last night, when opening the festival in the Wesley Hall. He was introduced by the president of the society, Mr M. B. Charteris. The Mayor said they would find that the society would stand the test fop many more years. The festival honoured Greymouth, and had attracted competitors from all parts of the Dominion. He paid a tribute to the founders of the organisation and to those who had carried it on through the years. The festival this year represented a large increase in the numbei’ of competitors. Last year there were 700, and this year it. was more than 1100. This, he said, augured well for the future of the society, and pointed to the fact that Greymouth must be recognised as one of the homes of art and music. The Mayor paid a tribute to the adjudicators, and wished them a happy ending to their work. It was on them that the young artists depended for encouragement, so that they would come again, and try for further-honours in the future. "To the 1100 competitors I say it must be understood that all cannot win, and I know that you will accept the decisions of the judges,” said the Mayor. He added that he honed the winners would encourage the losers, and that the latter would always remember that there could not be a winner if there was not a loser.
