BRUNNER NOTES

[Our own Correspondent] The sympathy of residents is extended to the relatives of the late Mr T. Howson, whose death occurred this week As a partner in the bakery of Howson and Mulqueen, he had been a generous supporter of most of the sports clubs of the district, and his death at such an early age is regretted by a large circle of friends. Many colds and much influenza are prevalent in the Borough at the present time and many residents have been confined to bed. Most interest in the AucklandWest Coast match last week-end centred in the appearance of the former local lad, D. Gibson, in the former team. Playing as wing threequarter, he was given few chances on Sunday to display his ability, but it was evident that he had lost none of the speed for which he was reputed when playing locally. Arrangements have alniost been completed for the visit of the champion senior reserve team to Auckland early in September. TAYLORVILLE SCHOOL COMMITTEE A report on the meeting held in Greymouth to re-form the West Coast School Committee’s Association, was furnished at the monthly meeting of the above committee, by the chairman, Mr R. Butterfield. In this he stated that the main aim would be the establishment of a West Coast Education Board, which it was felt would give a much better, service to the Coast schools. Until this time, the Association would strive to its utmost to support the requests of any committee. The local committee decided to affiliate. Arrangements were made to purchase a new sewing machine and three pencil sharpeners and to darken the senior rom for the use of a projector. Advice was received that the Education Department would in future, pay a £ for £ subsidy on voluntary contributions used for the purchase of school apparatus costing £lO or more. The secretary was instructed to file a claim under this heading on all apparatus purchased during the financial year 1947-48. A plan of action to' be taken to obtain the desired improvements to the school was decided on. The headmaster reported that the Board workmen were engaged upon the interior and exterior renovation of the dental clinic and the third classroom had been completely renovated. It Was decided to forward a letter of thanks to the Domain Board for the use of the supper-room at the z Pavilion while this work was being done. BRUNNER WOMEN’S INSTITUTE "We pass this way but once: Any good, I may do, let me do it now,” was the motto at the monthly meeting at which there was a good attendance, presided over by Mrs Warren. An invitation to attend the Reefton branch’s birthday party was received and six members expressed their intention of attending. Mrs Todd was deputised to write the first letter to the new Link in England. Six members expressed a desire to attend the Drama School to be held in Greymouth and a hearty invitation to attend was extended to anyone outside the Institute, who might be interested. It was decided to share in the adoption of a child from savaged Europe, and each member was asked to contribute to this worthy cause. Delegates to the Dominion Conference in Wellington were granted £3 each, out-of-pocket expenses, and the offer of Mrs J. Hill to make articles for the Sales Table there, was accepted with thanks. The financial statement showing a considerable credit balance was read by the treasurer. Competition winners were? Wandering Shilling: Mrs Bourke: Pikelets: Mrs Steel: Handmade handerchief: Mrs Wootton and Mrs Rodgers. Hostesses for the meeting were Mesdames Warren, and Gutberlet and Miss J. Warren. The meeting closed with the singing of “God Defend New Zealand."
