HOKITIKA NOTES
[Our own Onrrpsnnndentl HOKITIKA, June 5. The United Nations appeal for children in the Westland County Council district has reached £479 13s 9d to date. At a meeting of the High School Committee, the Rector, Mr Jeffries, and Mr W. E. Green were deputed to select suitable trees for planting on Arbor Day. The Rector reported a credit of £B5 10s 8d as a result of the school shop day. The committee expressed thanks to all for a solendid effort, and the public for their support. The chairman and treasurer were appointed to confer with the Board to purchase books for the school library up to £22. It was resolved to discuss at the next meeting the advisability of the committee purchasing all text books for the secondary school and renting the books to the pupils on a yearly basis. The committee was asked to make representations to the No. 3 Licensing Committee to have the children* conveyed from Awatuna area to the Hokitika school. It ®lvas decided to hold the school fancy dress juvenile ball on August 13. A grant of £9B was made available to the secondary department
For library, music, social studies, commercial art. science, homecraft and physical education. Donations to the United Nations appeal amounted to £l2 3s. The Rector reported on the excellent work being carried out by the Council staff to the school frontages. It would mean a big improvement in school environment.
