Communist Pattern for Czech Constitution

PRAGUE, May 9. The Czech Parliament unanimously passed the new constitution. Fiftiy-four deputies were absent. Over 20 of them have fled from the country. Twelve are in prison. Another three are awaiting sentence in Bratislava on charges of conspiracy against the republic. The Prime Minister, M. Gottwald, said the new constitution would pattern Czephcslovakia on Russia. The constitution -provides for a single-chamber Parliament with a life of six years. The constitution decrees the establishment of a “neople’s democratic republic, deprived of hostile elements,” with equality between the Czechs and the Slovaks, but does not affirm the rights of minorities as did the 1920 constitution.
