CRICKET HUGE SCORE FOR AUSTRALIA Match Against Surrey

(Rec. 9.0) LONDON, May 8 Don Bradman’s tilth century at The Oval and a practically unblemished 17K from Bariies, laid the foundation for the huge Australian score of 4 for 479 at stumps in the first game in London against Surrey. A crowd of 29.000 had a magnificent day’s cricket. The weather was warm and the sky cloudless. The wicket tore, and the even-paced Morris and Barnes set the tempo of Australia’s scoring with a partnership of 136. Then Bradman and Barnes added another 207 in 140 minutes before Barnes went leg before wicket to Squires. He had batted for 256 minutes and hit 18 fours. He gave one chance when he might have been stumped off Laker at 59. Bradman’s only mistake was made just before he was'dismissed when he hit one hard and low to Bedser at mid-wicket. He batted for 1(4 minutes for 146. He hit 15 boundaries. Harvey was batting soundly when a leg-spinner from tne left arm slow bowler, McMahon, turned sharply and bowled him. Hassett carried on through the day’s closing stages and took 61 not out off the tiring bowlers, with a graceful innings marked by fluent shots behind the wickets. McMahon was the most dangerous of the Surrey bowlers. Bedser swung the ball of the day, but the test candidate, Jim Laker, did not improve his prospects of selection. The Surrey fielding throughout an exacting day was good. Scores were:— AUSTRALIA —First Innings Barnes, lbw bSquires 176 Morris, lbw., b McMahon 65 Bradman, b Bedser 146 Hassett, not. out 61 Harvey, b McMahon i T. Johnson not out 19 Sundries 5 Total for 4 wickets 479. Bowling: Bedser 1 for 67; Surridge 0 for 70; Laker 0 for 103; Squires 1 for 62; McMahon 2 for 151; Holmes 0 for 21.
