Building Materials Demanded By Maize Growers
PA. GISBORNE, May 7. Protests are to be lodged by the Poverty Bay Farmers’ Federation to the Departinent of Agriculture, the Maize Marketing Committee and the Aid-to-Britain Council concerning the. non-fulfilment of pledges by officials that supplies of maize crib building materials would be made available to growers extending the acreage and to new producers. * Concern over reports that cargo vessels trading to Gisborne would not bring more fencing posts here for an indefinite period is expressed by the Farmers’ Federation. It stated that there are a few posts in Gisborne now and that ships are to be directed to load coal only from South Island ports. , . . The department advises that it is extremely difficult to secure corrugated iron, of which the district’s requirements were 1,200 sheets, it stated that growers had been offered substitute roofing, comprising layers of light water-proofed fibreboard with a netting centre at 7s per square yard, which. is 30 per cent, dearer than iron, and with the additional framing required and the shorter life would work out 100 per cent, dearer.
