Australia to Weed Communists Out Of Defence Work

(Rec. 10.40) CANBERRA, May 7 There is a careful check now being made' on the scientists who are employed on important defence work in Australia to see that they are not Communists. This is being made by the Commonwealth authorities. “Scientists are the ones that have to be watched,” said the Minister oi Supply, Senator Armstrong. “They—and not the plugs —are in the position to give away secrets. We know of no Communists whose positions in defence works would give them an opportunity of giving away official secrets to a foreign power.” The Minister , made it clear, however, that he was not in favour of discharging all of the Communist .merely because of their political beliefs.
