Labour M’s.P. Question Costs of Altering Princess’s Residence LONDON, May 5. In reply to questions in the House of Commons about the modernisation' of Clarence House, the future London home of Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh, the Minister of Works (Mt C. W. Key) said it was estimated that the work would cost £50,000. The average number ol workmen employed would be 55 and the work would be finished by the end of the year. Central heating and hot water fittings were being installed, and the house wired for electricity. Mr R. Chamberlain (Labour, Norwood): In view of the strict economy enjoined on all of us, is it right that this money should be spent while hundreds of thousands are desperately in need of homes? M r Key: I am of the opinion that the expenditure is warranted. Sir Thomas Moore (Conservative) asked how the cost compared vyith the money spent on the mansions bought by the Coal Board. Hughes (Labour, South Ayrshire) asked if it were not a fact tnat thousands had to live with their mothers-in-law, and would it not De better to adapt Clarence House for accommondation for married people There was no reply. .
